Israel and the U.S. launched attacks against Iran, pushing the Middle East into a renewed military confrontation as hopes faded for a diplomatic solution to Tehran's long-running nuclear dispute with the West.
Iran US tensions news LIVE: Soon after multiple explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday, Israel said it had launched ‘preemptive strikes’ against Iran. This was followed by Trump's confirmation of US role in the strikes as he said that the US had begun a major combat operation.
The first strikes of the attack appeared to target the compound home to Iran’s 86-year-old Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in downtown Tehran. Trump posted a video on social media that sought to justify the attacks.
Explosions were heard in Iran's capital Tehran, news agency AP reported. The agency also reported that Israel's defence minister confirmed his country has attacked Iran and has declared a state of emergency.
